Exciting stayer Maluckyday lived up to his pedigree, with bloodlines traced to Sir Tristram (who sired 45 Group 1 winners, including three Melbourne Cup winners). The son of Zabeel was hailed as one of the most exciting stayers to emerge from Australia in years, and in 2010 won the Group 3 Lexus Stakes (Hotham Handicap) on AAMI Victoria Derby Day earning valuable ballot exemption for the Group 1 Melbourne Cup a few days later. He surprised everyone when he beat home champion So You Think to run second against Americain at just his ninth racetrack appearance.
Maluckyday suffered a severe life-threatening lung infection in 2011. He beat the odds, recovered and returned to racing competing in the 2012 Melbourne Cup. However the outstanding ability that he had shown prior to the infection, which included placings in all nine of his starts, failed to return and he was retired in 2014 to Living Legends. Despite never winning a Group 1, he remains one of Australia’s most exciting – but untapped – talents.
